In the 2009 budget the UK government
announced a vehicle Scrappage scheme for cars which gives a discount of
£2000 on new cars in exchange for the scrapping of an old car more
than ten years old.
The purpose is to help re-invigorate the UK car market and take older cars off the road in
favour of newer, more efficient and environmentally friendly models.
The government contributes £1000 towards the discount and the manufacturer the rest.

this report in The Times.
Q. What vehicles qualify as trade-in under the scheme?
A. It must be a car or small van under 3,500kg. It must be first registered in the United Kingdom (UK) on or before 31 August 1999. The person buying the new car must have been the continuously registered keeper of the trade-in vehicle for at least 12 months, with a UK address on the registration certificate (V5C). It must have current MOT certificate before date of order of the new vehicle.
Q. What vehicles can I buy under the scheme?
A. You must buy from a dealer of cars where the manufacturer is participating in the scheme.
The vehicle can be a car or van up to 3,500kg in weight and declared new at first registration
in the UK with no former keepers.
Q. Can I get a discount on top of the £2000?
A. Yes, although the government only contributes the first £1,000, dealers may offer you Scrappage discounts in excess of £2,000
Q. Can I buy the trade-in back off the garage?
A. No, the dealer must scrap the vehicle.
Q. Can I trade in a vehicle I have for business use?
A. Yes.
Q. Can I trade in multiple vehicles?
A. Yes but its one discount for one trade-in for one new vehicle. You may not trade in two or
more cars for a £4000 discount off one new car.
Q. How do i get the discount?
A. You will get £2000 straight off the price when you make the purchase.
Q. Who takes care of scrapping the trade-in vehicle?
A. The dealer will take care of getting a certificate from an authorised dismantler,
which the purchaser will not have to handle.
Q. When does the scheme end?
A. The scheme will end in February 2010 or when the £300 million ear-marked for the scheme runs out, whichever is sooner, though there have been calls for the Government to extend the scheme.
